Celebrate new ideas and make connections with art and the community at the San José Museum of Art. At noon on the first Wednesday of each month, Lunchtime Lectures feature artists, scholars, and other expert speakers who explore topics related to SJMA’s exhibitions or trends in the cultural community. Bring your lunch or grab a bite from Café Too.
Educated at San José State University, Binh Danh has emerged as an artist of national importance with work that investigates his Vietnamese heritage and our collective memory of war. He will speak about mortality, memory, history, and landscape.
Michael Ogilvie, director of public art for the City of San José, will discuss public art as a catalyst for a participatory, thoughtful, and active civic landscape.
Artist Raimonds Staprans, whose colorful paintings are showcased at SJMA this spring, will discuss his work and sign copies of the catalogue Full Spectrum: Paintings by Raimonds Staprans ($55, available in the Museum Store).
For Jazz Appreciation Month, Pascal Bokar Thiam will explore the West African roots of American jazz. Bokar Thiem teaches music at the University of San Francisco and the French American International School, San Francisco. Co-presented with San Jose Jazz.
As in many of the works in the exhibition The House Imaginary, the house is a central motif in Gothic novels. It is often a place with memories and secrets rather than a safe haven. Katherine D. Harris will trace this theme from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818), on through twentieth-century novels such as Stephen King’s The Shining or Mark Danielewski’s House of Leaves.
