First Friday with San Jose Jazz + Geography of the Arts

6–9pm
Free admission.

This special edition of First Friday will feature admission-free access to all galleries, live music, and a mobile pop-up event with hands-on art-making activities. Late-night bites and cash bar are available at el cafécito, by Mezcal.

In partnership with San Jose Jazz, we are pleased to present Kyle Hernandez, guitarist, composer and vocalist whose unique, fiery style will rock the Wendel Education Center from 7–9pm.

Additionally, Geography of the Arts will provide four pop-up stations and kiosks to inspire all members of the San Jose community to tell their stories at postcard, poetry, and street photography booths. Participants are invited to share their unique narratives by using the onsite photo booth to submit their creations to the San José Story Map, an online storytelling contest. Geography of the Arts is presented and sponsored, in part, by San José State University’s College of the Humanities and the Arts, in partnership with the San José Public Library. It is also sponsored by Abierto and a grant from California Humanities, a nonprofit partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Featuring Kyle Hernandez

Jazz guitarist, vocalist, composer and producer Kyle Hernandez delivers a fiery and distinctive sound at every concert. There is a gritty soul and passion that captures his New York roots on his most recent album as a bandleader The Kyle Hernandez Jazz Quartet, which DownBeat Magazine called “a passionate and honest” performance.

It’s only one of three albums released since he received a scholarship to the New School of Jazz and Contemporary Music in Manhattan. He’s since shared the stage with musicians like Wynton Marsalis, Roy Hargrove, Eric Alexander, Robert Glasper and many others. Kyle has performed at festivals and venues throughout the United States including the Reno, Savannah, Newport, Toronto and Montreal Jazz Festivals; and the Mondavi Center, Blue Note, Great American Music Hall, Rockwood Music Hall, Sullivan Hall and the Jazz Standard.
