SJMA Announces Programs for Fall 2021

    San José, California (September 30, 2021) — The San José Museum of Art (SJMA) announces a new season of in-person and online public programs for fall. Highlights include an artist talk between world-famous artists Hito Steyerl and Trevor Paglen; a museum lecture about the life of artist Sonia Gechtoff; and the return of Art 101: Booze + Brushes in a new online format. Upcoming programs that are fun for the whole family include SJMA’s annual Día de los Muertos celebration at Community Day, Third Thursday: Holiday Edition, and free First Fridays.

    SJMA also invites the public to attend the opening of two brand new exhibitions at First Fridays, Beta Space: Trevor Paglen on November 5 and Our whole, unruly selves on December 3. Free admission for everyone starting at 6pm.

    October

    First Friday + CityDance San José

    Friday, October 1, 2021; 6–9pm.

    Free admission Join us for an evening of art in the Museum and open-air dancing at the Circle of Palms Plaza.

     

    Artists in Conversation: Hito Steyerl and Trevor Paglen

    Community Day: Día de los Muertos

    Saturday, October 23, 2021; 11am–6pm, in-person free admission; 12–2pm online at twitch.tv/sanjosemag and facebook.com/SJMAG.

    Celebrate Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) with live entertainment, cultural demonstrations, and an eclectic mix of artmaking experiences. Note: these experiences happen online only. Visit the Museum to celebrate with free admission. Presented with San José Multicultural Artists Guild (SJMAG).

    Lunchtime Lecture | Sonia Gechtoff: Abstractions and Icons

    Wednesday, November 3, 2021; 12pm PDT, online. Free, registration required.

    Take a closer look at the life and works of abstract expressionist Sonia Gechtoff with Rachel Middleman, associate professor of art history at CSU, Chico.

     

    First Friday | Beta Space: Trevor Paglen Opening Reception

    Friday, November 5; 6–9pm. Free admission.

    Celebrate the opening of Trevor Paglen’s first sound commission.

     

    Third Thursday with Mosaic America

    Thursday, November 18; 6–7pm PDT, online. Free.

    Mosaic America returns to SJMA.

     

    December

    First Friday: Our whole, unruly selves Celebration

    Friday, December 3; 6–9pm. Free admission.

    Celebrate the opening of Our whole, unruly selves.

     

    Art 101: Booze + Brushes

    Friday, December 10; 6–7pm PDT, online. $15 ($10 for SJMA members).

    Enjoy an inspiring evening of painting based on works in the exhibition Break + Bleed.

     

    Third Thursday: Holiday Edition

    Thursday, December 16; 6–7pm PDT, online. Free.

    SAN JOSE MUSEUM OF ART
