Kids Art Camp: FAQS

With an amazing line-up of professional guest artists from San José, CA to Brooklyn, NY inviting campers into their studios, we can't fit all the goodness into the confines of socially distanced protocol! Our practiced and perfected virtual format will entertain, inform, educate, and allow campers the ability to engage in a small, intimate group format, with the freedom to explore creatively in the comfort of their own home, without hiding their smiles!

Q: Are you open for registration?
A: Registration begins the week of April 5. If you register by April 25, you'll receive a $100 off early bird discount! Don't delay!

Q: Where do I register my child for Online Kids’ Summer Art Camp?
A: Please follow this link: sjmusart.org/kids-art-camp-summer

Q: How will an online art camp work?
A: Virtual Summer Camp will be held using ZOOM. Campers will be distributed a pre-camp preparation packet that details everything campers will need to know to be ready for camp. In short, the basics are a computer or tablet with a camera, microphone, and stable internet connection.

Each day will be led by an SJMA studio art educator, in addition to two SJMA gallery teachers, teaching live content to campers in a practiced format ideal to engage with each child. We have enhanced our camp program to add elements that wouldn’t be possible in a traditional, on-site camp; specifically, visits with professional guest artists that will conduct demonstrations to show campers the process of their work, as well as studio tours of their personal art studios!

Camp will culminate in a virtual art exhibition which highlights campers' artwork alongside our studio art educators' and gallery teachers' as well as artwork from each of our guest artists. To see what last year's summer art camp virtual exhibition looked like, check it out on our website https://sjmusart.org/kids-summer-art-camp-virtual-exhibition-2020

Q: What art supplies will my camper need?
A: We've got you covered! We've carefully selected art supplies for each week of each age range for camp and these curated art kits are included in the price of camp registration! All you need to do is pick up your camper's art kit from SJMA the Friday before their registered week begins. You will receive a Welcome email the week before camp starts which will provide details for art kit pickup including a reminder of the day as well as the time and what to do if you are unable to pick up your camper's kit on pickup day.

Q: What is the schedule for the online summer camp?
A: Ages 6–8 and 9–11 camp will be held from 9am–12pm Mon–Fri of your registered week. Teen camp (held weeks 2–5) ages 12–14 will be held 1–4pm Mon–Fri of your registered week.

Note, teen camp will offer a variety of specialized art studies including:
Week 2: Art 101 Crash Course (learn the basics of 2D media such as acrylic painting and drawing.)
Week 3: Expressive Drawing (love to draw and want to learn more about charcoal and portraiture? This will be the perfect week to learn.)
Week 4: Photography and the Visual Narrative (learn how to use your smartphone to create artwork that creates a visual narrative through storytelling!)
Week 5: Setting the Scene (become acquainted with using gouache! Gouache is a versatile paint medium that works like matte watercolor.)

Q: What if my camper(s) miss a day or are late to the session?
A: After each week of camp, selections of artist and teacher tutorials and demos will be archived on our website, your camper can pick up whatever they may have missed, or simply review and practice again for the fun of it!

Q: Can I register for multiple weeks?
A: Sure! With our new online flexible format, we encourage campers to register for more than one week, as each week will have some art projects that will allow for more practice of similar material and a new highlighted guest artist.

Additionally, each week of our teen camp (ages 12–14) highlights a specialized deep dive into a variety of creative media. Specialized weeks include: Photography and the Visual Narrative, Expressive Drawing, Setting the Scene with gouache paints, and an Art 101 crash course.

Q: Are scholarships available?
A: Yes! We have scholarships available! If your camper is in need of a scholarship in order to attend online camp, please email us at education@sjmusart.org. Please note, we have one scholarship per age group per week available, please inquire early.

Q: What kind of art projects will campers be working on?
A: Our goal is to teach, entertain, engage, and support young creatives while giving adults in the household the time to be ‘hands-off’ to attend to their own workload, whatever that may be. With that in mind, we will email a brief ‘ready for tomorrow’ list of art supplies needed for the next day and any additional information needed so that campers are self-sufficient for each day’s three hours of live camp. SJMA gallery teachers and studio art educators will engage campers in art lessons and collaborative, interactive tutorials that will keep kids active, social, and challenged with a variety of teaching styles in drawing, painting, mixed media, and found object/recycled household items as our starting point for art-making. Our enhanced format includes STEAM-based art+science weekly projects taught by an industry-leading engineering educator. Children will also benefit from our guest artists' studio tours, demos, and Q&As, as well as the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to show their own artwork alongside professional artists' work in our virtual art exhibition at the conclusion of camp.
