Art 101: Writer's Workshop | Mac Barnett and Shawn Harris

Inspire kids to make, share, and perform their own stories! In this project-based workshop, author Mac Barnett and illustrator Shawn Harris show kids how to create their own characters and how to write and draw a scene. The workshop will be followed by a performance of participant's stories.

About the Workshop Instructors

Mac Barnett 

Mac Barnett is a New York Times-bestselling author of stories for children. His work has been translated into more than 30 languages and sold more than 2 million copies worldwide. Barnett’s books have won many prizes, including two Caldecott Honors, three New York Times/New York Public Library Best Illustrated Awards, three E.B. White Read Aloud Awards, the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award, Germany’s Jugendliteraturpreis, China’s Chen Bochui International Children’s Literature Award, and Italy’s Premio Orbil. Barnett lives in Oakland, California. 

Shawn Harris

Shawn Harris’s first illustrated book Her Right Foot by Dave Eggers received seven starred reviews, was an Orbis Pictus Award Honor Book, an ALA Notable, and a PW Best Book of the Year. Harris’s other picture books include Eggers's What Can a Citizen Do (a Time Magazine Best Children’s Book), Everyone’s Awake by Colin Meloy, and A Polar Bear in the Snow by Mac Barnett, which received four starred reviews. His authorial debut, Have You Ever Seen a Flower? is being published by Chronicle Books in May, 2021.  

Harris got his start as an illustrator in the early 2000's creating album art for bands, including his own, The Matches (with which he still occasionally plays shows). He lives in Northern California and enjoys surfing.
