World Renowned Muralist To Speak at SJMA

Release date

SAN JOSÉ, California (October 23, 2017) — World-renowned artist and muralist, El Mac (Miles MacGregor), will be discussing his work, his collaborations with The Propeller Group, and upcoming mural project on Wednesday, November 1, noon, at the San José Museum of Art.  El Mac’s large-scale wall murals blur the lines between fine art and graffiti. His murals are found across the United States and internationally. The lecture is part of the Museum’s ongoing Lunchtime Lecture series. Tickets to Lunchtime Lectures are free with Museum admission.

The mural is a collaborative undertaking by the San José Museum of Art, The Propeller Group, El Mac, award-winning children’s author and artist Christopher Myers, Empire 7 Studios, and the Children’s Discovery Museum. The mural will bring a larger-than-life face of a refugee youth to a highly-visible wall of the Children’s Discovery Museum in downtown San José. In September, SJMA launched a Kickstarter campaign to help fund the mural project.

El Mac began painting with acrylic paint and painting graffiti in the mid-1990s and focused primarily on life-like renderings of human faces and figures. He developed a unique style of rendering, utilizing repetition of contour lines, reminiscent of ripples, Turing patterns, and indigenous North American art. He has painted murals in the United States, Mexico, Denmark, Sweden, Canada, South Korea, Belgium, Italy, The Netherlands, Puerto Rico, Spain, France, Singapore, Germany, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Vietnam, and Cuba. El Mac had solo exhibitions at the Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum, Galerie Wolfsen, Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, Joshua Liner Gallery, Robert Berman Gallery, and Fifty24SF.
