SJMA Acquires Virtual Reality Work by Jacolby Satterwhite

Release date

SAN JOSE, California (August 3, 2017, updated 4/2/18)—  The San José Museum of Art recently became one of the first museums in the United States to collect virtual reality video art with the acquisition of Jacolby Satterwhite’s Domestika (2017). Merging techno-futuristic landscapes, news footage, and action-packed dances, Domestika follows Satterwhite through a now defunct underground gay night club in Brooklyn. Inspired by his mother, a self-taught artist and musician who was mentally ill, Satterwhite saturates this queer, safe space with his mother’s music and enigmatic language. Syncing his fantastical animated video to his mother’s hypnotic voice, Satterwhite imagines an alternative reality of infinite possibility.

SJMA acquired the work with funds contributed by an anonymous donor.
