SAN JOSÉ, California (May 24, 2018) — Viet Thanh Nguyen, author of the bestselling novel The Sympathizer and winner of the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, will host an evening of readings and roundtable discussion for the upcoming lecture “Vietnamese Writers of the Diaspora,” at the San José Museum of Art on Saturday, June 9, at 6 PM. The lecture will feature eight writers, who are current fellows of the Djerassi Fellowship Program and represent a variety of genres including fiction, poetry, comics, memoir, and children’s literature. Tickets to the lecture are $12 ($6 for members) and available for purchase online at sjmusart.org/calendar.
Presenting fellowship writers are Thi Bui (Berkeley), Nam Le (Sydney), Hoa Nguyen (Toronto), Nguyen Phan Que Mai (Jakarta), Aimee Phan (Berkeley), Bao Phi (Minneapolis), Dao Strom (Portland), and Monique Truong (New York). The writers will be part of the upcoming literary anthology Dialogues Across Borders: War and Race for Vietnamese Writers for the Diaspora.
Isabelle Thuy Pelaud (San Francisco, CA), Lan Duong (Los Angeles, CA), and Anh Thang Dao (San Francisco, CA) will moderate the program.
Following the program, Viet Thanh Nguyen will sign copies of his new publication The Displaced: Refugees Writers on Refugee Lives, a book of essays he edited by seventeen refugee writers around the world. The book will be available for sale at the Museum Store ($25).
The special evening is presented in partnership with the Djerassi Resident Artists Program and Diasporic Vietnamese Artists Network (DVAN).
