A series of 30 recent paintings and 10 prints by Shimomura provided SJMA visitors with an intimate glimpse into one of the most tragic periods in American history—the Japanese- American internment during World War II.

An American Diary, which was made possible by generous grants from the Civil Liberties Public Education Fund, The School of Fine Arts, and the Faculty Research Fund, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas, toured nationally. The San Jose presentation was sponsored by AT&T corporation.
