Have you ever wondered what the prison industrial complex is? Or how race relates to mass incarceration? Or what exactly prison abolition is? Join Gina Dent, Associate Professor of Feminist Studies, History of Consciousness, and Legal Studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz for an introductory conversation around these issues which are the central themes of the upcoming exhibition Barring Freedom. Dent will give a brief introduction, followed by a Q+A moderated by senior curator Lauren Dickens, so bring your questions.

About the Speaker

Gina Dent, Associate Professor of Feminist Studies, History of Consciousness, and Legal Studies, UCSC is a committed activist, scholar, and educator, Dent’s current book project, Prison as a Border and Other Essays, grows out of her work as an advocate for human rights and prison abolition. She is the editor of Black Popular Culture, and author of numerous articles on race, feminism, popular culture, and visual art.
