SJZ Jazz Jam
In partnership with San Jose Jazz, the San José Museum of Art presents its first ever participatory jazz jam! Join us for First Friday and celebrate the opening night of San Jose Jazz Summer Fest.
SJZ’s beloved monthly all-ages jazz jam gets a 3-hour Summer Fest edition with a theme worthy of the occasion. Saxophonist Michael Webster and his Quartet, who preside over the open jam every First Friday, turn the focus to one of the music’s towering figures: John Coltrane.
This edition draws its material from across Coltrane’s restless evolution, with selections spanning every chapter of the master’s career. The tunes reach back to his hard bop days in the Miles Davis Quintet on the album Workin’, move through the harmonic labyrinth of the Giant Steps era, touch the searching spirituality of A Love Supreme and stretch into his boundary-dissolving avant-garde period. It’s Coltrane’s entire arc, offered up as common ground for the players who take the stage.
Webster and his Quartet anchor the session as the rhythm section, laying the foundation for anyone ready to step up and play. Bring your horn, bring your voice or just bring your ears. However you come, this is jazz as a living, breathing conversation across generations.
