Free with Museum admission

Join artist ektor garcia for a casual conversation and crochet as he discusses his process-based practice and the endless, radical potential for weaving and undoing, while working on a new crochet work. Participants are invited to bring their own knitting, crocheting, sewing, or other woven projects, to stitch while listening. The conversation will be moderated by Shelby Hendricks, group tour and family programs manager. This event is programmed as part of the exhibition ektor garcia: loose ends, on view through June 7, 2026.

About

ektor garcia is a nomadic artist whose work is shaped by a rich and eclectic array of influences, from Mexican handcraft traditions passed down by his grandmother to a DIY punk sensibility shaped by his Bay Area upbringing. He often weaves in symbols from Mexican folktales and colloquialisms, queer subcultures, and transitional architectural forms. Through this layered approach, garcia challenges social and cultural hierarchies tied to gendered and racialized labor, while rejecting fixed definitions of existence or identity.

Shelby Hendricks (she/her) is a fiber artist with over 10 years of experience in art and science education. She moved from Illinois to the Bay Area in 2021. With a background in biology and anthropology, Shelby aims to impart a lasting appreciation for the natural world and the interconnection of art, science, history, and culture.
