Community Day: El Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)

Join SJMA’s contemporary celebration of a tradition that can be traced back more than 2,500 years. Get creative and participate in hands-on art-making activities (including sugar-skull decorating) for all ages. Party with performing skeletons, enjoy live music, and experience colorful dance performances. Learn about the ritual of the ofrenda (altar), which honors the memory of departed relatives and loved ones.

Schedule

11 AM – 4:30 PM: Hands-on artmaking for all ages
11 AM – 5 PM:  See a sixteen-foot paper mache Skeleton sculpture by Danniel Martinez
1– 2:30 PM:  Take your photo with roaming skeleton performers
1– 4 PM: Ofrenda demonstration by Phyllis Carrasco
1:30 – 2 PM: Dance performance by Los Lupeños Folklórico
2– 2:45 PM:  Music by Mariachi San Jose
