Art 101: Clay Workshop

As the exhibition Character Studies: Clay from the Collection shows, ceramic art is more than pots. This fall SJMA partners with Higher Fire, a teaching studio and contemporary ceramics gallery located in downtown San Jose, to offer this workshop. Design and build a clay mask while you learn intricate hand-building techniques from an expert Higher Fire instructor. Registration is $40 ($25 for members), which includes all materials plus the firing fee.

ART 101 regularly sells out and advance registration is strongly recommended.

Character Studies: Clay from the Collection

The ceramic sculptures in this exhibition are wildly inventive expressions of the human figure; they range from earthy abstractions to larger-than-life busts and whimsical characters. The exhibition draws from the Museum’s collection and also includes two loans by Bay Area artists from a new generation who are continuing this region’s legacy of prominence and innovation in the medium.
