Initial Public Offering: New Works from SJMA’s Permanent Collection (2014)

Tim Hawkinson's work is sometimes difficult to describe, much less categorize. He often uses readily available materials—found, everyday objects, and his own body—as medium, reference, and model. His process can be long and arduous, labor intensive, repetitive, and technical. What emerges at the end, however, is a sense of play, humor, and the bizarre as he takes the ordinary to new and captivating realms.

Scout (2006 – 2007) exemplifies several quintessential elements in Hawkinson's work, such as absurdist humor. Hawkinson lashed together pieces of cardboard boxes discarded by the garment factory beneath his studio to create the sculpture’s disproportioned body. He chose to assemble the sculpture from boxes because he thought the material evoked leather or skin. As Hawkinson explained, the work is a "sensory homunculus buckskin outfit for a sensory homunculus scout." A sensory homunculus is a distorted human figure that reflects the relative space our body parts occupy on the somatosensory cortex. Our hands, lips, feet, and sex organs have more sensory neurons than other parts of the body, which Hawkinson expressed with comedic gesture.
