It's About Time: Celebrating 35 Years (2004-2005)
Patssi Valdez first carved a niche for herself in the activist Chicano culture of East Los Angeles in the early 1970s. Since then she has become one of the nation’s leading Magical Realist painters, working from a distinctly personal point of view. Every element in —based on the desert exhibit at the Huntington Library in Southern California—is animated. The tree limbs flail about like human arms and the succulents extend like outstretched fingers. Blazing, saturated colors result in a dazzling blend of realism and fantasy. Valdez believes that “our fantasy life is every bit as real and important to us as the concrete reality of our everyday lives.”
