The House Imaginary (2018)

Mildred Howard uses an everyday household item, a bottle, to construct a house where memories are treasured and relationships built. The title of the work intertwines the Spanish word for “family” with the English “familiar,” describing a sacred space in which inheritance is nurtured and protected in the very walls. Adobe: Sanctuary for the Familia(r) creates an environment for reflection and contemplation.

Inside Out: Selections of the Permanent Collection (2004-2005)

Mildred Howard uses everyday household items in order to emphasize that the ordinary objects of our lives should be treasured and protected like our familial and cultural memories and histories. The title of the work reinforces this idea by intertwining the Spanish word for “family,” familia, with the word “familiar.” As suggested by the title, the building resembles a home—a place where relationships are built and memories are collected—and a sanctuary, an environment for reflection and contemplation. Adobe: Sanctuary for the Familia(r) therefore becomes a sacred space in which visitors are compelled to reconcile their cultural history with their collective and individual memories.
