Degrees of Separation: Contemporary Photography from the Permanent Collection (2010-2011)

Since the 1960s, documentary photographer Mary Ellen Mark has traveled repeatedly to India to record people who exist on the fringes of society. She has tackled such challenging topics as the prostitutes of Bombay; the mentally ill; people living out the final chapters of their life at Nirmal Hriday, the Home for the Dying; Nirmala Kennedy Center, a home for retarded and homeless women; Shanti Nagar (Peace) Village, a leprosy hospital; and other centers. Calcutta is typical of her noninvasive approach. Her work revolves around her fascination with people who are often invisible in mainstream society: "What I want to do more than anything is acknowledge their existence," the artist once commented.
