Ben Schonzeit is one of the leading practitioners of Photorealism, a style of painting that emerged in the late 1960s. Photorealist painters create images that look nearly photographic by using airbrushes as well as painstaking traditional techniques. Schonzeit paints unusually large-scale still lifes and carefully selects his objects for their size, shape, and color. In Boat Bruch II, he significantly enlarged and carefully cropped the image of the brush in an unconventional approach to still life that emphasizes the abstract qualities of the composition. Schonzeit’s portrayal of a brush—one of the tools of his trade—could be interpreted as a metaphorical self-portrait.
