Juicy Paint (2009-2010)

Using a trowel and a scraper, Jeffrey Keith has developed an unconventional technique of repeatedly layering pigment onto the canvas and then scraping it off again. Traces of his process are embedded in the vertical and horizontal strokes that remain on the canvas—an unstructured grid formed by squares of varying sizes whose effect resembles a patchwork quilt. In Elsbeth, the loosely painted, overlapping squares of color become smaller as they descend from top to bottom. The painting is titled with the Scottish version of the name of Keith’s mother, Elizabeth.
