Breaking Ground: Gifts from Katie and Drew Gibson (2013)

Raymond Saunders uses visual energy, pointed imagery, and a jazzy rhythm in his work to address topics of social and cultural relevance. Inspired by his own experiences, Saunders delves into issues of temporality and childhood memory. He evokes associations that confront the complexities of our lives while acknowledging our inherent vulnerability and resistance to change. He draws on a vast bank of invented and appropriated powerful narrative images to create his own rich mix of painting, drawing, collage, and assemblage.
