Renegade Humor (2012)
Desire for the Other was made for the San Jose Museum of Art’s exhibition. The thirty-foot-long red vinyl couch with sixty-six mahogany legs resembles a giant insect. Ten feet off the ground, its head has an armchair stuffed in its mouth. Additional household objects—a telephone, a toilet, a television—appear in outline form underneath the vinyl upholstery, as though the creature had already devoured these items and is now in the process of digesting them. Brian Goggin gained his inspiration for while in Thailand for six months. He lived in a bungalow with the bathroom open to the sky. One morning while shaving, he was aghast to see an eighteen-inch, brightly colored millipede drop from a tree into the toilet. The writhing creature both horrified and fascinated the artist, and the idea for was born. The sculpture comments on society’s sometimes insatiable hunger for consumer goods.
