Frank Lobdell: Wonderland (2012)
While Frank Lobdell used printmaking tangentially in his early work, beginning in the later 1960s the medium would play a major role in his ideas regarding space. Lobdell spent the summer of 1966 as a fellow at the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in Los Angeles. It was most likely during that time that he began formulating the type of composition featured in the lithograph '67. In Los Angeles, Lobdell was consumed with “getting all the parts together for the big painting.” The parts included drawings and prints done prior to actual painting, though Lobdell’s practice would not always follow this linear progression. Printmaking, however, enabled Lobdell to create and rework compositions using similar imagery until he achieved the forms he needed for his paintings.
