A Culture of Spontaneity: San Francisco Abstract Expressionism from the Permanent Collection (2008-2009)
Although older than many of his counterparts, John Saccaro was a latecomer to the Abstract Expressionist movement. Only in 1955 did he begin to paint in the manner for which he is best known, using slashing, angular brushwork that bears some resemblance to the gestural canvases of Franz Kline. This painting pays homage to the post-Impressionist painter Pierre Bonnard in its palette of soft pinks and frosty blues.
