Suburban Escape: The Art of California Sprawl (2006-2007)
French photographer Stéphane Couturier shot this photograph he titled —the French translation for window—while visiting construction sites in the new suburbs of San Diego. On the horizon, miles of undulating hills have been bulldozed to make way for what some critics describe as “McMansions,” or the “fast-food version of the American Dream.” Couturier apparently disapproves of such development, which we infer from his deliberate positioning of a wooden beam across the center of his image—the internationally recognized symbol for “stop.”
