Momentum: An Experience in the Unexpected (2014-2015)

Richard Misrach's photographs reveal a deep concern for contemporary social and political issues, particularly interactions between humans and the natural environment. His "On the Beach" series comprises large-scale, lush color photographs of swimmers and sunbathers in Hawaii. By photographing from above, Misrach created a sense of distance and objectivity: strangely impersonal, isolated figures within seemingly idyllic environments. Misrach began the series shortly after September 11, 2001, the tragic event that "changed the way I looked at everything."

Local Color (2012-2013)

Richard Misrach’s photographs reveal a deep concern for contemporary social and political issues, particularly interactions between humans and the natural environment. His “On the Beach” series comprises large-scale, lush color photographs of swimmers and sunbathers in Hawaii. Rather than choosing a vantage point on the beach or ocean, Misrach photographed from above, often from a hotel room. In so doing, he created a sense of distance and objectivity: strangely impersonal, isolated figures within seemingly idyllic environments. Misrach began the series shortly after the tragic events of September 11, 2001, which he remarked, “changed the way I looked at everything.” The lone figures set within the expansive yet ambiguous environments convey a sense of foreboding and call attention to the precariousness of life.
