In 1934, Helen Lundeberg and her husband Lorser Feitelson co-founded Postsurrealism, an American splinter of Surrealism that emphasized structure and rationality rather than the arbitrariness of dreams and fantastic imagery. Her fondness for visual order eventually gave way to hard-edge abstraction in the manner of fellow painter Karl Benjamin. Landscape elements always hover beneath the surface of her work, even as the paintings tend toward abstraction. In Untitled (Thin Red Line) the use of multiple color bands creates the illusion of a horizon line. The undulating line and closely-related hues suggest rhythmic motion and quiet, perceptual tension.
