Character Studies: Clay from the Collection (2015-2016)
Stephen De Staebler first began working with clay in the early 1960s as a student of ceramist Peter Voulkos at the University of California, Berkeley. With the same expressive spirit as his instructor, De Staebler uses the force of his entire body (rather than just his hands) to sculpt abstract forms that appear to be weathered by time and nature. He created this sculpture by stacking individually fired pieces so that their ridges and folds allude to human vertebrae or ancient monuments fallen to ruin.
