Beyond Tradition: Permanent Collection Photographs (2003-2004)

In 1999 Cia Foreman traveled throughout Israel and unexpectedly became immersed in a history of her Jewish heritage, which previously held little importance for her. For the series , Foreman superimposed images from a vintage postcard book of Jewish women from around the world onto photographs she took during her visit to holy sites in Israel. The layering of images suggests that the people who are “occupying” these ancient sites have created a new sense of place—endowing them with alternative significance and associations.
