Sleight of Hand: Painting and Illusion (2014-2015)
At the turn of the millennium, Chester Arnold found himself pondering the viability of realist painting in today’s world. While growing up in Munich, Arnold became fascinated by the illusionistic power of European realism. Ghosts is Arnold’s ironic and autobiographic reinterpretation of Caspar David Friedrich's Romantic masterpiece The Wreck of the Hope, 1824. Arnold has envisioned his own canvases like shards of ice in the frigid Arctic Ocean. He emulated Friedrich’s craft and composition but adapted the scene to portray his notion of his own treacherous and risky journey as an artist.
