Biography

Born in 1970, Amy Stein currently resides and operates out of New York City. Originally raised in both Washington D.C and Karachi, Pakistan, Stein received her BSc in Political Science from James Madison University in 1992 and an MSc in Political Science from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland in 1995. In 2006, Stein earned her MFA in photography from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Also in 2006, Amy won the Saatchi Gallery/Guardian Prize for her Domesticated series. American Photo magazine named her as one of the top fifteen emerging photographers in the world. Her first book, Domesticated took the Best Book Award at the 2008 New York Photo Festival. Having been extensively exhibited, her work can be found in the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Photography, the Nevada Museum of Art, SMoCA and the West Collection. Based in New York, she teaches photography at the Parsons New School for Design in New York. (SJMA Collections Committee, 2009)
