Biography

Chema Cobo studied philosophy and graduated from the University of Madrid, Spain in 1979. He has received numerous awards from the Spanish Government, including Madrid’s prestigious Department of Culture Scholarship in 1980 and a scholarship from the Foundation Juan March in 1981-82. He was an artist-in-residence at P.S.1. in New York in 1994 and his paintings are in the collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Madison Art Center, Madison; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Museum of Art, Carnegie Institute, Pittsburg; and the Seattle Art Museum. This would be the first work by Cobo to enter SJMA’s permanent collection. (SJMA Collections Committee, 2004)
