Biography

Born in New York City in 1954, Tony Marsh attended California State University, Long Beach, where he earned a B.F.A. in 1978 and New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, where he graduated with an M.F.A. in 1988. He moved to Los Angeles after leaving Alfred University and eventually accepted a position teaching ceramics at Long Beach. His work has been shown in both solo and group exhibitions at institutions including The Contemporary Museum, Honolulu; Laguna Beach Museum of Art; and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. His work is held in the collections of the Cranbrook Museum of Art, the Oakland Museum of California Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among others. This would be the first work by Marsh to enter SJMA’s permanent collection. (SJMA Collections Committee, 2003)
