Biography

Stephanie Weber was born in Lubbock, Texas, in 1941.  She received a B.F.A. from UCLA in 1963 (where she studied with Richard Diebenkorn, Elmer Bischoff, and Nathan Oliveira) and went on to graduate school at the University of Illinois from 1963-1966. Despite the abstract figurative tradition she was surrounded by as a young artist, she has not painted the figure for more than 20 years.  Weber primary influences include spiritual abstractionists Mark Rothko and Ad Reinhardt. Weber’s work is in the collections of such world-class institutions as the National Museum of American Art, Washington D.C.; San Francisco Fine Arts Museums; and the Brooklyn Museum of Art.  Her recent solo exhibition sites included Klein Art Works, Chicago (2000); Toomey Tourell Gallery, San Francisco (1999); and MD Modern, Houston (1998).  This is the first work by Stephanie Weber to enter the Museum’s collection.
