Biography

Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1931, John Battenberg studied painting at the University of Wisconsin. After a brief stint in the Marine Corps during the Korean War, he resumed his education at St. Cloud State University, Minnesota in 1953. In 1955 he elected to use the remainder of his GI Bill to study at Ruskin School, Oxford University, where he worked with literary and visual artists, including John Updike, R.B. Kitaj, Richard Boyle, Neil Chevlin, James Adams, and William Tucker. In 1960 he received a MFA in painting from Michigan State University, but by 1963, when he and his wife moved to the Bay Area, he had changed his artistic focus to sculpture. After completing graduate work at California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, he taught at San Jose State University for nearly two decades. His work has been exhibited at Fresno Art Museum, Triton Museum of Art, Nevada Museum of Art, and the San Jose Museum of Art. He has completed numerous commissioned pieces for Green Valley Technical Plaza, Fairfield, CA; University of Phoenix, Phoenix, AZ; Park Center Plaza, San Jose, CA; and Parkway Corporate Plaza, Roseville, CA.  This will be the third work by Battenberg to enter the permanent collection. This will be his first bronze work to enter the collection. (SJMA Collections Committee, 2002)
