Biography

Born in Freetown, Sierra Leone, Piccinini moved to Australia in 1972. She began her sculpture career in the late 1990s and early 2000s by creating machine-like hybrid beings made with fiberglass and automotive paint, made in collaboration with professional car modellers and custom painters. For more than two decades, she has been creating meticulously-crafted, "realistic" sculptures of beings that co-mingle animal, plant, machine and human, treating the "strangeness" or "otherness" of hybrid creatures and cyberforms with care and compassion.
