Nilima Sheikh first trained as a modernist, but eventually rejected the style for a more traditional Indian method, reminiscent of miniature painting of the Rajput and Mughal courts, which spanned the sixth to the eighteenth centuries. The tradition also emphasized detailed and complex narrative rather than the modernist focus on a single image. In After Amnesia, Sheikh utilized these methods to create a rich storyline that questions the political climate under the guise of a more conventional aesthetic. |
