In Nothing (Else) Matters, Bari Kumar, who was trained in graphic design, juxtaposed refined lettering and pixilated imagery. This portrait of the artist’s son is overlaid with a line drawing of the artist holding his son, in a pose reminiscent of the “Virgin and Child.” Perhaps the omission of his head from the composition suggests Kumar’s distanced relationship to his son. The artist explained this work is from a series “dealing with the physical and emotional state of transition” following a trial separation from his wife.1 1Email correspondence with the artist, June 25, 2010. |
