Ganesh Pyne

Born 1937, Calcutta (now Kolkata)
Lives and works in Kolkata

Ganesh Pyne is known for his small-scale tempera paintings endowed with an eternal, magical quality. Pyne blends his own colors and carefully layers them to achieve luminous effects. He takes as long as three to four months to complete his meticulously detailed paintings. Figures, like this dancer, appear to be lit from within. A coat rack serves as her stationary partner. Pyne finds inspiration for his dreamlike scenes in Hindu mythology and Bengali folk tales, many of which his grandmother recounted to him as a child.
