Passing the Baton

With Drawn Arms commemorates Tommie Smith's iconic gesture of raising a fist– originally an act of protest against international human rights abuses and a symbol of solidarity with the civil rights movement in the United States.

Through a special series of advocacy workshops, the San José Museum of Art explores how Smith's gesture today is a figurative passing of the baton– an inivation to inspire future generations. Each program arms individuals with tools and resources to support causes important in their communities.
