Join Nidhi Gandhi, curatorial and programs associate, as she discusses the influence of Bay Area history on the upcoming SJMA exhibitions Yolanda López: Portrait of the Artist (opens July 7) and Nuts and Who’s: A Candy Store Sampler (opens August 11). She will touch on previous Bay Area-specific projects at SJMA, as well as the philosophies, processes, and challenges of bringing a unique Bay Area focus to each forthcoming exhibition.

Organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, Yolanda López: Portrait of the Artist examines the profound influence of Yolanda López (1942–2021) as an artist and activist who radically reimagined representations of women in Chicano/a/x culture and society at large.

Nuts and Who's: A Candy Store Sampler focuses on the convergence of irreverent and free-spirited artists around the Candy Store Gallery in 1960s Northern California, and the cross-fertilization of ideas that resulted.
