Creative Minds: Sita Sings the Blues (2008, 82 minutes, unrated)

In her animated version of the epic Indian tale “the Ramayana,” director Nina Paley set the story of Sita, a character revered for her chastity, to the 1920s jazz vocals of Annette Hanshaw. using her “beguiling, consistently inventive visuals and sly yet melancholy tone” (Village Voice), Paley has connected the tale to her parallel experiences of life, love, and relationships.

Join us at Camera 12 Downtown, 201 South 2nd Street, San Jose, for a special screening of the film that The New York Times called “affecting, surprising, and a lot of fun.” Then, return to the Museum for a private tour at 2:30pm of the exhibition Roots in the Air, Branches Below: Modern and Contemporary Art from India, in which you will see imagery of Sita and other epic figures. 

The film is unrated and is recommended for adults and teens. Admission is $10 ($6 for members), which includes the film screening, tour, and Museum admission. Theater doors open for seating at 11:45 am.
