The exhibition City Limits, City Life highlights our relationship with the built environment. SJMA invites you to explore the urban and cultural landscape of downtown San Jose in this street-photography workshop. Artist/instructor Emilio Banuelos will teach you how to document a public space and compose a personal narrative with images. Learn photographic techniques and visual storytelling skills in this three-hour session. Participants of all levels of experience are welcome. Bring your own digital camera; all other materials will be provided. ART 101 is limited to 25 participants ages 13 and up. Advance registration is required.

City life has fascinated artists for hundreds of years. Early twentieth-century artists in the United States often depicted the physical and social realities, as well as the potential emotional disconnect, that can accompany urban density. In recent decades, artistic focus shifted to the ramifications of climate change, localism, and globalization. City Limits, City Life encourages audiences to think about urbanism in a larger context and coincides with collective efforts to enliven and transform downtown San Jose.
