Before joining SJMA in 2008 Krane was director of the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (2001–2008) and University of Colorado Art Museum, Boulder (1996–2001); curator of modern and contemporary art at the High Museum, Atlanta (1987–95); curator at the Albright–Knox Art Gallery (19–1987) and a fellow at the Walker Art Center (1978–79). She received her BA from Carleton College; her MA from Columbia University and her MBA from the University of Colorado. She has served on the faculties of SUNY Buffalo, Emory University, and the University of Colorado at Boulder.
