SAN JOSE, California (March 15, 2013)— Poet Sally Ashton will give a Lunchtime Lecture at the San Jose Museum of Art on Wednesday, April 3, 2013, at 12 noon. Her topic will be “Ekphrasis: Making Connections with Poetry.” Ekphrasis is a response to one work of art through another medium—for example, a poem about a painting. Ashton will consider will consider connections between image and text using her own poetry and other poets’ work. She will explore works of art that incorporate text—like those featured in SJMA’s exhibition Mark My Word—as well as artworks that originate from text. The lecture is free with Museum admission.
Ashton is editor-in-chief of the DMQ Review, an online journal of poetry and art, and teaches at San Jose State University. She was recently Poet Laureate of Santa Clara County.
Lunchtime Lectures take place on the first Wednesday of the month at noon in the Charlotte Wendel Education Center at SJMA. Visitors are welcome to bring food and beverages. The final lecture of the spring series will be “Matta and the Post-Colonial Odyssey” by Apryl Berney, lecturer at De Anza Community College, Cupertino, on May 1, 2013.
SJMA will also present two additional programs in honor of National Poetry Month. On April 27, from 10 AM to 12:30 PM, Ashton will teach “DIY Art: Writing Ekphrastic Poetry.” Participants will write poems in response to works of art in the galleries. Tickets to DIY Art are $15 ($10 for members). At 2 PM, Bay Area poets will read new work at SJMA’s Fourth Annual Poetry Invitational. Admission to the invitational is free.
