Animals played an important role in Joan Brown's life. In Christmas Time 1970 (Joan and Noel) (1971), the family pets, alongside Brown, guard an eight-year-old Noel from harm. Here, Brown presented herself as both a protective mother and an artist wearing painting gloves and clothing.
