Visit to the Conservation Lab at the Legion of Honor and Personal Consultation with Debra Evans, Head of Paper Conservation
Courtesy of Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco

    Retail value: $500

The paper conservation laboratory at the Legion of Honor, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, cares for nearly 100,000 prints, drawings, photographs, and books in the museums’ collections. Here is your chance to meet with chief paper conservator Debra Evans for an hour-long private tour of the lab and a consultation on your personal collection. Ms. Evans and the conservation staff utilize science and art to examine, document, preserve, and treat an impressive range of works on paper. They are experienced in everything from the repair of water and light damage on prints to the proper display of contemporary photographs.

Works on paper are inherently more fragile than other media. Guidance on proper care and handling, appropriate storage, temperature and relative humidity control, and limiting exposure to light, gaseous pollution, and airborne particulates is invaluable. You might inquire about how to transport works on paper, identify the causes and extent of deterioration or alteration in a specific work, or learn about specific historic and artistic methods and materials.

This wonderful opportunity for a single individual or a couple to visit the paper conservation laboratory offers a stimulating mix of sciences and the humanities, along with rare access to the expertise of its head conservator.
