Jay DeFeo depicted her life and the everyday objects of her world in paintings, drawings, and photography. In 1975, she began a series of paintings and drawings of man-made objects: camera tripods, shoetrees, and swim goggles. The series “One O’Clock Jump,” initiated by the artist in 1978 to mark her upcoming fiftieth birthday, features a broken tape dispenser. DeFeo focused on the central void of the dispenser, which becomes unidentifiable in almost all of the final images. Yet, DeFeo captured an inner quality of life in this mundane object by meticulously rendering the dispenser’s circular spindle and paying careful attention to the wafer-thin layers of translucent tape.
