Momentum: An Experience in the Unexpected (2014-2015)

Rolfe Horn typically uses longer exposures in his work to capture the movement over time on a single piece of film. He works with black and white film, which he feels takes the image one step away from the reality we can see as human beings. Horn usually drives along roads, domestic and international, until he finds something that catches his eye. Creek, Mashima, Japan was taken after he noticed a cluster of small rocks fixed into the water. The small boulders seem cemented and fixed into the creek, displaying a sculptural quality. The shot taken of Hazugawa River on the Kyoto, Japan frames simple elements that possess a strong sense of balance, which reminded Horn, seeing the country through Westerner’s eyes, of the general feeling one gets of Japanese culture. Evening Prayer, Sukhothai, Thailand is a photograph focused on the reflection of the water, the punctum or central focus of the shot being the ripple in the water. When taking this photo, Horn employed a longer exposure at first, but then saw ripples from the swimming fish, inspiring him to capture the moment.
