Visual Politics: The Art of Engagement (2005-2006)

A seminal painting created by Hung Liu during the peak of the cultural identity movements in the 1980s, Resident Alien is an oversized image of the green card issued to the artist by the Immigration and Naturalization Service four years after she arrived in the United States from China. Liu sarcastically refers to herself using the name “Fortune Cookie” and her “Alien Number” appears above a perched eagle that symbolizes the freedom granted—with many strings attached—to American immigrants.
